When a Small Problem Isn't That Small

Sometimes what looks like a simple technology problem can have a much bigger impact on someone's daily life.

Sometimes the smallest technology problems have the biggest impact on everyday life.

At Smart Home Concierge, I often provide technology support for older adults, but sometimes the smallest calls teach the biggest lessons. One began with a simple phone call.

"My television isn't working anymore."

Normally, that would sound like a routine service call. A loose cable, dead batteries in the remote, or perhaps a setting that had accidentally changed.

This wasn't one of those calls.

I already knew my client well. She's in her nineties and legally blind due to macular degeneration. Over the years, we've worked together to make the technology in her home accessible. She doesn't really watch television anymore. She listens to it.

The familiar voices from the news, her favorite programs, and the background sounds throughout the day have become part of her daily routine. Television isn't just entertainment. It's companionship.

Like many older adults, she found ways to adapt.

She memorized the buttons on her remote control. She learned to use voice commands. Together, we created a system that allowed her to remain independent without having to rely on someone else every time she wanted to watch—or rather, listen to—television.

So when she called to say her television wasn't working, I understood why she was concerned.

Looking Beyond the Obvious

When I arrived, the television itself was working perfectly.

The problem was much smaller.

Somehow, the remote control had lost its pairing with the television.

After reconnecting the remote, everything was back to normal within a few minutes.

Technically, it was an easy fix.

But it reminded me of something I see regularly.

Technology problems are rarely just about the technology.

Independence Is Built One Small Success at a Time

People sometimes assume older adults struggle with technology because they don't want to learn.

That hasn't been my experience.

Many of my clients have invested a tremendous amount of effort learning devices that most of us take for granted. They've memorized buttons they can no longer see clearly. They've learned voice commands. They've adapted to hearing loss, reduced vision, arthritis, and memory changes.

They've built routines that allow them to stay independent.

When a device suddenly stops working because of an update, a lost connection, or a setting that changed without warning, it isn't simply frustrating.

It interrupts a routine they've worked hard to create.

It's About More Than the Person Sitting in Front of Me

Recently, a family member wrote something in a Google review that has stayed with me.

He explained that before leaving on a two-month trip, he wanted someone he trusted to help his 94-year-old mother-in-law if technology stopped working.

He ended his review by saying:

"With Selwyn's support, my load is lightened and I'm able to travel without concern."

That sentence reminded me that my work isn't only about helping older adults.

It's also about helping their families.

Knowing there's someone they trust who can respond when something goes wrong gives adult children and caregivers one less thing to worry about.

Sometimes that's just as valuable as fixing the technology itself.

What I've Learned

People often ask what Smart Home Concierge does.

Yes, I teach people how to use technology.

Yes, I help solve everyday technology problems.

But over the years, I've realized that what I really do is help people continue living the lives they've built.

Sometimes that means explaining a new app.

Sometimes it means reconnecting a remote control.

Sometimes it simply means showing up when someone says,

"My television isn't working anymore."

Because sometimes a small problem isn't that small.
